Joe Manfre (he/him) believes all students are capable of learning mathematics through different processing times and mechanisms. He also believes students learn things best when they are empowered to create and teach others. He has actualized those beliefs in his work as a teacher, instructional coach, and state mathematics educational specialist and you can learn more about his perspectives in the “resources” tab. In 2018, He received a Hawai’i Innovation Grant for Student-Led Heterogeneous Learning Communities (SHLC), an instructional routine designed to empower student leaders in a semi-autonomous learning environment, and as the Hawai’i state mathematics educational specialist, he served roughly 180,000 public school students in 247 schools. He is a Distinguished Modern Classrooms Educator (DMCE) and Modern Classrooms Expert Mentor, and currently serves as a 7th grade mathematics educator at an independent school in Honolulu, Hawai’i.
Wanting to be a mathematics educator since high school, Joe received his B.A. majoring in mathematics and minoring in secondary education from CUNY Queens College. He has a M.Ed. in instructional leadership from Chaminade University of Honolulu, and GCERT in ethnomathematics from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. His mathematical content teaching experience ranges from 7th grade pre-algebra to AP Calculus AB. In addition to independent schools, he has taught at middle and high school public title 1 schools in rural and urban O’ahu.
Joe brings knowledge of best practices in mathematics a’o (teaching and learning), including curriculum, instruction, and assessment from policy level to practitioner. His expertise is in mathematics education consulting, instructional coaching, mentoring, workshop facilitation, and keynoting.
Based in Honolulu, HI, Joe is a husband, father of two daughters, and enjoys reading, writing, playing chess and watching baseball.
